In Spring, all roads lead to Rome.
Spring is definitely the best time of the year to come to Rome, bars and restaurants have by this time opened up their terraces and streets are buzzing with people until late at night.
To celebrate Easter, Romans eat “bigné” and “frappe”, traditional fried cakes, which originate back to the celebrations of Saint Joseph, loved by the Romans for his humility and generous character.
A lot of festivities take place in the city during Easter time, with the highlight being the spectacular Via Crucis procession on Good Friday evening which is led by the Pope himself. On Easter Sunday, outdoor mass is celebrated by the Pope at St. Peter's Square.
April 21st is when Rome celebrates the anniversary of its foundation (763 BC). Several of the city's archaeological sites are opened to the public just for this occasion and historical parades can be found around the city. On May 1st, Romans celebrate Labor Day with a large, free concert at San Giovanni Laterano Square.

Exhibitions in Rome:
  • Capitolini Museums (until March 19th): Purchases and Gifts at the Municipal Museum - Exhibition of pieces of art and other items purchased by Municipality of Rome over the last 9 years.

Visiting Florence at this time of the year means that you avoid the great influx of tourists which occurs during the the high season and at times can be quite overwhelming. With the arrival of Spring, temperatures are very mild making it perfect for discovering this enchanting city on foot. It is also a period rich in events for the Florentine people.
On March 25th, a ceremony is held in honour of the Annunciation, which also used to correspond to the celebration of the New Year in Florence up until 1749. This ceremony has experienced a revival since 2000 and historical parades now take place across the city on that day.
On Easter Sunday (April 16th), people gather at Piazza Del Duomo to assist in the ceremony of the “Scoppio del Carro”. For the last nine hundred years, the people of Florence have witnessed the explosion of an elaborate cart led by oxen from the Church of SS Apostoli. This spectacular ceremony symbolises the distribution of the Holy Flame to all people present and if the cart explodes, it is said to symbolise that all Florentines will have a very prosperous year.
This is also the occasion to see the “Calcio Storico” teams parading across the city, which are the same teams that you can see playing on June 24th in honour of San Giovanni Baptista, patron saint of the city.

  • Museo degli Argenti (until May 15th): Exhibition of Mythology and Erotica.
