Madrid's inhabitants are of course also well known for their partying, and during the hot summer months this becomes even more prominent; come nightfall many of the city's areas will be alive with the sounds of flamenco, tango and jazz, and streets will be full of dancing, partying and entertainment until the early hours of the morning.

During the summer, Rome seems like a different city, almost gone is the non-stop traffic, and the ancient streets, often shaded by thousand-year old buildings, become easily accessible to tourists and locals alike. Ten years ago the city would almost have shut for the whole of August, traditionally the month when Romans take their annual holidays and visit the surrounding coastline. But now you will find that throughout the summer months, the city offers some of its best entertainment. One of the main festivals is the "Estate Romana" (Roman Summer), run by the city's council, it is an umbrella name for numerous concerts, exhibitions, open-air cinema and festivals that take place throughout the city and often in some of the city's most splendid palaces and private parks. The Estate Romana runs throughout the whole of the summer (June 21st to September 21st) and many of the concerts are for free. And don't forget Rome is also not far from the coast, so you can always spend a day relaxing and bathing at the beach, like in Ostia, a popular local destination since the Ancient Roman times.

A few dates to note:

June 21st to September 21st - Estate Romana Festival
July 7th - Tracy Chapman concert at the Auditorium.
July 16th - Bob Dylan concert at the Auditorium.
July 16th - Roger Waters concert at the Olympic Stadium.
July 17th - Depeche Mode concert at the Olympic Stadium.
July 21st - Billy Joel concert at the Coliseum.
